Customer hierarchies

Customer hierarchies

You can create a customer hierarchy by linking related customers in parent–child relationships. This is useful when a customer has subsidiaries or other associated companies. With a hierarchy, you can:

  • use the parent billing address for the child

  • view combined sales histories

  • access child customers from the parent

You cannot merge customers in hierarchies.

Choose a parent customer

You can create a hierarchy in your customer records by choosing a parent for each child customer.

  1. Go to Sales → Customers / Credits.

  2. Open the child customer.

  3. Open General.

  4. Select the customer’s Parent. The parent must:

    • Not be a child for another customer

    • Use the same currency as the child

    • Be an active customer

  5. Optionally, select Bill parent. This will:

    • Automatically show the parent's Billing address in the child's sales orders.

    • Include the child's sales in the parent’s combined sales history.

    • Show the parent's Billing address in the child customer's Addresses tab.

  6. Save.

Combined sales history

When you enable Bill parent for a child customer, their sales history is merged with the parent customer's history. The parent's sales appear in the child's sales history, and the child's sales appear in the parent's. Child customers will also use the parent's Billing address in their sales orders.

You can view these combined histories on the Sales by product and Sales by document tabs of the customer record. Use the filter to control which sales appear: Show all sales, Show only parent/child sales, or Show only current customer’s sales.

View children

Parent customers display their children on the Child accounts tab. Select a child customer’s name to open their record.

Customer hierarchies and QuickBooks Online

If you use the QuickBooks Online integration, parent and child relationships will sync between Cin7 Core and QuickBooks Online. The sync direction depends on your integration settings:

  • From QuickBooks only
Hierarchies sync from QuickBooks Online to Cin7 Core.

  • Both ways
Hierarchies sync in both directions. If a conflict occurs, Cin7 Core is the source of truth.

Cin7 Core supports only one level of parent and child hierarchy. Cin7 Core will not sync more levels (for example, grandchildren or below) from QuickBooks Online.

Parent and child relationships will sync when you update a customer in either Cin7 Core or QuickBooks Online. If the parent doesn't exist yet, the child sync is queued until the parent syncs. QuickBooks Online and Cin7 Core will also update if you remove the parent/child relationship.

When a child customer has Bill parent enabled, invoices sync to QuickBooks Online under the parent customer.
