How to add Additional attributes to template

I see from the help centre that I can add additional attributes to templates however there are no instructions no how to do it.  Does anyone know?  I tried using the name of the new attribute “Installation Date” and without the space "InstallationDate, but it doesnt work either way on template. 

Install date: «InstallationDate»

    I worked out the field name, it was CustomField3.  However, it still won't render on the template.
