Assemblies to trigger Production and Purchase Orders
Currently if I am unable to complete an assembly no backorder is triggered for any missing components. This means I have to manually start relevant production and purchase orders. When products are out of stock on a sales order they are backordered however this does not happen during a production assembly, it creates a gap in our work processes.
If an auto assembly is backordered it creates an assembly order in draft. I am happy to then manually authorise this order. However at this point it would make sense that any products out of stock either create a production order (if product has a production BOM) or purchase order.

Hi Matthew,
The Reorder Backorder process has two parts if you are trying to purchase raw materials for an assembly product.
1. When you run the reorder backorder for the first time, new assemblies for backordered items are created in a draft stage from the demand created by the backorder. Once done, you would need to authorise the new assemblies created, which would then flag the demand for raw material.
2. When you run the reorder backorder process for the second time, the demand created for the assemblies is taken into consideration and POs are created in a draft stage.
Production orders could be created within the MRP process for demand/supply requirements.
Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your response. I can find the assembly as a draft and this works well. The issue I have is when I authorise the new assembly that has been created by the backorder no further actions are triggered…
So if I authorise an assembly with missing parts I have to then manually create the production orders for those parts.
This is not the case when products with a production BOM are backordered from a sale - in this case the production order is automatically created as a draft.
Thanks again for your help
Hi Matthew,
When you authorise the new assembly, it flags the demand even though you do not see anything happening on the user interface. This will get triggered at the next run of reorder backorder. However, the most advanced version of the reorder process is MRP, which will handle every type of order, including manufacturing orders and it's raw material requirements at the same time.
Hi Anderw, I have just run this through with an active assembly order that was in draft. Once authorised no new reorder back order has appeared and no production order for the missing product…
Yes, you are correct. Reordering backorders does not create production orders. You would need to use MRP for that. However, if you would like to continue the conversation about your account, I'd recommend creating a support ticket so we can delve into the specifics of your account settings.
Thanks again, Can I leave this here as a feature request as it would be very useful if assembly orders could trigger production orders when authorised?
Yes, you can, within the Feature Request Area, also add a use case explaining why a nested BOM (you can nest multiple products in parallel within a Manufacturing BOM as in an Assembly BOM) will not solve your current requirement.
I thought I was posting to feature request here so thank you for you help - I will transfer over.
