Multiple SKU's for single product / Alternative SKU

James Holt

We supply to wholesalers that often have their own SKU's of our products.

Wholesalers often have to adapt our SKUs to fit within their system. Wholesalers often add a prefix and/or remove the last characters to ensure it works with their requirements.

E.g Our SKU would be 4152643566 and the wholesaler would change it to ABC-415264 to fit within their 10 character limit through their software.

This often brings confusion when quoting over email or on the phone as different wholesalers have different information, leading to frustration for our business and the wholesalers business.

It would be good to have a section that allowed us to enter the SKU from different wholesalers, and would allow the product to show up in the product availability and order fields in cin7.

It would still be suitable if it showed just our businesses SKU, as long as the product showed up when typing in any wholesaler SKU.

Hi James, this is currently possible using the Additional Attributes section of a product, set one up called Wholesaler Code and add your ABC-415264 to it.  This then becomes searchable in Products, Availability and when adding to new sales orders.  Then I suggest customising your templates for these wholesalers so that it is this code that appears on their paperwork and not yours.  All fairly straight forward to do.

We have the same issue and some of our products are actually labeled with the wholesalers SKU and our SKU. For some products, we have the barcode on the product setup as the wholesalers SKU instead of ours. This causes issues with picking since the WMS only recognizes the SKU entered into the barcode field and not the additional attributes field.

I agree with Suzie, our scanner doesn't recognise the SKU in the additional attributes field. Rusty when you add new sales orders are you using a scanner?

Thank you Rusty. It appears that if I put the Wholesaler SKU into the order section manually it works after putting the relevant information into Additional Attributes.

Unfortunately we have quite a few Additional Attributes already set, and if we had to put in codes for every wholesaler we'd likely need all 10 additional attributes exclusively for this purpose.

If cin7 expanded the amount of additional attributes that'd be amazing.

I still feel a alternative SKU section could be useful, and would allow us to keep the additional attribute fields empty to use in the future as required.

Hi James, we do same. Use one field in additional attributes “MPN” (manufacturer part number). And then the Inventory > Suppliers tab for their SKUs whether same as MPN or from various distributors. Is always a total of 2 SKU fields. Works fine in our situation. Like that the MPN can be queried from POS or top-level Inventory search whereas unfortunately the supplier sku only queries from the Purchase Order tab.
