Combined Picking in the WMS

Simon Thompson

When picking multiple orders using the WMS app, we see one line on the screen per one line on each order. It should be possible to combine lines by SKU/Bin to make this faster.

For example if I have 100x orders, With a mixture of three SKUs on each of them: When picking these orders at the same time, I would see just three lines (if there were enough in the first bins). Otherwise I have up to 300x lines, and I have to scan bins up to 300x times.

The time saving would be enormous. Currently, I'm having to look at printing the orders our on paper.

We don't really have an issue with the current implememtation on the Pick on the WMS (apart from flipping the order of tote and batch fields).

We use a scanner, and we just scan the item on the main pick screen, secondary window we then just scan the tote, then the batch, and it returns to the main screen. It keeps it simple for us. We pick 14 orders per round.

Your suggestion is to scan the item once, but that would mean

    • On the first screen, the To Tote: list would be long
    • On the secondary screen, the To Tote: list would be long
    • It also means the Pick From: list may also have 1 or more bin locations. This will definitely not work for us, as we pick Alpha-Numerically by bin location, we're not picking based on SKU.
    • IE - We have 50 orders of an SKU, there are 25 units in Bin Location Axx.xx.xx. There are 25 units in Bin Location Fxx.xx.xx. Our picking stock in in Axx.xx.xx locations, so other SKUs are picked from there. To do what you're asking, they would have to group them by the bin location, but overall I do see how we're saving time with your suggestion. If anything, there is risk doing it this way - as if you use FIFO-Batch, the secondary screen isn't validating the item you picked, but only validating the batch number which isn't great (which a different story entirely)
