Feature Request: Enable Barcode as Unique Identifier for CSV Order Uploads

Stacey Stacey

Dear Cin7 Development Team,

I recently spoke with Mark Dessanayaka from your Solutions Architect team regarding this issue, and he suggested that I log a ticket to outline the request in more detail.

We currently use the DEAR/Cin7 B2B portal integrated with Cin7 Core, which allows customers to upload orders via CSV. This is a feature that a number of our wholesale customers are very keen to use.

At present, the downloadable order template and the CSV upload functionality across both Cin7 Core and the B2B portal relies on product code and product name as the unique identifiers. Unfortunately, this presents a challenge for many of our wholesale customers.

Most of our customers manage inventory across multiple suppliers and therefore use barcodes as their primary and unique product identifier. Product codes and product names often differ between systems, for example, customers may prefix SKUs with brand names, use different punctuation (such as hyphens instead of full stops), or apply their own internal naming conventions. Product names are also frequently worded differently.

As a result, when customers export orders from their systems, the files typically contain only barcode numbers and quantity. While barcodes are already stored against products in Cin7, they are not currently utilised as unique identifiers. This means barcodes cannot be used for CSV order uploads, making this feature effectively unusable for all of my customers, and I imagine many more of yours.

I believe this represents a significant missed opportunity, particularly given the increasing use of automated ordering and B2B self-service portals.

Allowing CSV uploads using barcodes would save my team a significant amount of time, reduce manual keying errors, and also save our customers time by removing the need to manually build carts within the B2B portal.

I would strongly recommend adding barcode as an accepted unique identifier for CSV order uploads, alongside product code and product name. Ideally, customers could submit orders using:

  • Product code + quantity
  • Product name + quantity
  • Barcode + quantity

This enhancement would greatly improve usability for wholesale customers, reduce manual order entry, and increase adoption of the B2B portal functionality.

Thank you for taking the time to review this request. I would be very happy to provide examples of customer order files or discuss this further if helpful.

Kind regards,
Stacey Power
