Expand bundles (BOM) on purchase orders

We use quite a lot of “kits” to make the sales process easier when there are lots of small parts needed for one regular solution. When an order is confirmed, we will then often need to create a PO for our suppliers who are not familiar with our kit codes. The option to “expand” a product with a BOM on a PO into the individual products would save a huge amount of time.

The whole kit / assembly BOM system is impractical and cumbersome when it comes to printing documentation for the fulfilment team.

One thing we struggle with is that there is no way to indicate on a picking slip that you actually need to print an expanded picking slip. I would love to be able to append all the assembly jobs for auto-assemblies onto the bottom of a picking slip so that fulfilment can see what the system has “done” internally.

Hey Nick, I may be misunderstanding but why not just always print the expanded list as default..? I haven’t checked specifically but I don’t think there’s any real downside vs the standard list..? Not for us at our small level anyway.

This is a bit off topic to the OP as they're after something for the PO side of things (perhaps reorder backordered might work)

For fulfillment of Sale Orders, I've already mentioned to Cin7 that the BOM for Pick / Pack needs a rework (I'm not sure where they're at with it), as there are issues with it

    • When you are trying to Multi Pick Orders → 1x manual and 1x electronically bom - expand/collapse button simply doesn't allow it.
    • When you are completing the Pack → If a BOM was collected individually, you might have 10 items, but the Pack only shows the BOM sku.
    • User having to decide to expand or collapse → Not great if you do both manual and electronic boms because you dont know unless you check each item in advance (works OK if you only do 1 of them - electronic or manual)

    My suggestion to Cin7 is

The system can distinguish between BOM that were made “electronically” vs “manually” by the “user”

    For any electronically created BOMs

    • These are not physically created in advance.
    • The WMS Pick should have those items listed individually to collect
    • There needs to be reference to the BOM sku, beside each of the items, so that Cin7 can fulfil the Sale Order from Shopify etc
    • The WMS Pack would list the items individually to scan, again with reference to the BOM sku to fulfil the Sale Order from Shopify etc

    For any manually created BOMs

    • These are manually created in advance, and therefore would have a the BOM barcode applied to it / location of where it is.
    • The WMS Pick would list the BOM sku and bin location to collect it
    • The WMS Pack would list the BOM sku

    Result

    • The expand / collapse button could probably disappear entirely
    • It removes the user needing to know if they're suppose to expand or collapse BOMs, and should fix printing of pick lists.
    • It would let you pick both types when multi-picking orders via the WMS
    • Addresses the pack side where we can scan the items individually that completes/makes up the BOM (if it was created electronically)
