Lot/Batch/Serial no.-Specific Barcode Support for FEFO Inventory Management

Request:

We request that the ERP system generate and print a lot-specific barcode on lot labels rather than using the standard product (SKU) barcode.

Business Requirement:

The current lot labels use the product barcode, which identifies only the SKU and not the individual lot. This means multiple lots of the same SKU share the same scannable barcode, preventing warehouse staff from positively identifying the correct inventory lot through barcode scanning alone.

For operations utilizing FEFO (First Expired, First Out) inventory management, each lot must be uniquely identifiable. The barcode should represent the specific lot record within the ERP, allowing warehouse personnel to scan and validate the exact lot being picked, received, transferred, or counted.

Reason for Request:

Using the SKU barcode instead of a lot-specific barcode introduces unnecessary risk of human error. Operators must manually verify lot numbers after scanning, which defeats one of the primary purposes of implementing an ERP and barcode-driven warehouse process.

A unique lot barcode would:

• Positively identify the exact lot within the ERP.
• Support accurate FEFO picking and inventory rotation.
• Reduce manual verification and data entry.
• Minimize picking and shipping errors.
• Improve inventory traceability and audit compliance.
• Increase warehouse efficiency and confidence in barcode-driven workflows.

Expected Outcome:

Each lot created in the ERP should be assigned its own unique barcode that is printed on the lot label. Scanning this barcode should retrieve the specific lot record—not just the SKU—allowing all inventory transactions to occur against the correct lot without relying on manual lot number verification.
